What is ACS and why Indian IT folks need it?
First, ACS is the Australian Computer Society. It is the official assessing body for ICT roles.
Without a positive ACS letter, your EOI for 189, 190, or 491 cannot proceed.
Also, ACS verifies that your degree and work map to an Australian ICT standard.
Most-used ANZSCO codes for Indian techies
Next, pick the ANZSCO code that matches your day job. Wrong code is the top reject reason.
Common codes are 261313 Software Engineer, 261111 ICT Business Analyst, and 261312 Developer Programmer.
Also, 263111 Computer Network and Systems Engineer fits cloud and DevOps Indians.
Qualification check: Indian B.Tech, BCA, MCA
Then ACS checks your degree. Indian B.Tech CSE or IT maps to AQF level 7 with a major in ICT.
However, B.Tech in non-IT branches like Mechanical needs an MCA or extra ICT subjects.
Also, BCA without MCA is treated as AQF level 6, not 7.
How many years does ACS deduct?
Next, ACS deducts the early years used to gain skill. Major in ICT B.Tech: 2 years deducted.
Major in ICT MCA: 1 year deducted. Non-ICT degree with RPL route: 4 to 6 years deducted.
So a Mechanical engineer with 8 years of dev work counts only 2 years toward PR points.
Documents to upload for ACS
Then upload these: passport, degree certificate, all marksheets, and detailed CV.
Also, employment proof needs reference letters on company letterhead. Each must list role, dates, and exact tech tasks.
Statutory declarations cover periods where letterhead is not possible.
ACS fee, processing time, and validity
Finally, the fee is AUD 500 for skills assessment, AUD 550 for RPL, plus 10% GST for non-residents.
Most files clear in 4 to 8 weeks. The result letter is valid for 2 years.
Also, you can ask for a free post-grant review within 3 months if facts change.
